Where to hike in Marin

If you want the beach, start at Tennessee Valley. East Peak is the view when the air is clear. Cataract after the rain, when the falls are actually running.

• Tam Valley

  Tennessee Valley Trail

  This is the easy walk out to the beach. The lot fills before 9 on weekends, so go early. No dogs on the trail to the beach.

  East Peak / Verna Dunshee

  This is the view when the air is clear. It is eight dollars to park at East Peak.

• Fairfax

  Cataract Falls

  Go after the rain, when the falls are actually running. It is still a good walk in summer. You start at Alpine Dam, on the Fairfax side.

• Point Reyes

  Bear Valley to Arch Rock, or Chimney Rock

  Parking is free out here. If you want the longer walk, start at the visitor center and go to Arch Rock. Chimney Rock is the short one by the lighthouse — wildflowers, and the overlook.

• Mount Tam
