Where to get matcha in Marin

The good stuff, not the dusty green powder at the back of the chain case.

Marin does not have a matcha scene the way the city does, and that is fine. A handful of cafes take it seriously, and one tiny San Anselmo outfit is quietly one of the best sources in the country. Here is where we would actually send you.

  1. Mill Valley

    Equator Coffees

The iced matcha latte everyone in town actually drinks. Downtown, across from the Depot, and they do not drown it in syrup unless you ask.

  2. San Anselmo

    Comforts

A proper cafe matcha: earthy, a little sweet already, and you can sit down with a pastry instead of hovering over a to-go cup.

  3. San Anselmo

    Longway

Woman-owned cafe and clothing shop on San Anselmo Avenue. Small menu, excellent iced matcha, the kind of place you tell a friend about.

  4. Fairfax

    Java Hut

Drive-thru, patio, on the way to everything. Not a ceremony. A cold matcha you can drink in the car and still feel like you did something right.

  5. San Anselmo

    Breakaway Matcha

Not a cafe. Appointment-only tastings and the tins you keep at home. If you care about ceremonial matcha, this is the source.
